A Stand Against Wage Theft
February 16, 2012
Sen. Peter Wirth's memorial supporting efforts to end wage theft
passed the senate unanimously with about an hour-and-a-half left in
the legislative session.
Senate Memorial 48 calls for an elimination of wage theft. Wirth told
the body "this is a pretty major issue," and that workers in New
Mexico have their wages stolen when employers don't pay overtime,
don't hand over final paychecks, or pay less than minimum wage.
Wirth said he's also heard of servers whose tips disappear at the end
of the night.
The memorial passed 40-0. It was supported by labor groups, faith
organizations, the New Mexico Attorney General, the Department of
Workforce Solutions, and the U.S. Department of Labor, Wirth said.
