"FACT ARE STUBBORN THINGS" (John Adams)
May 6, 2012
Independent Source PAC has exposed the extensive role Steve Cabiedes, the campaign manager for Sheryl Williams Stapleton’s primary opponent, in Republican Party efforts to make it more difficult for minorities and the poor to register to vote.
As always, ISPAC’s information is fully documented and easy to verify. The truth is never sleazy; it is just the truth. (Read the materials here).
Steve Cabiedes joined with Republican lawyer Pat Rogers, also the lawyer for Downs at Albuquerque in the Dirty Downs Deal.
There can be no sugar coating his role in alleging “widespread” voter registration fraud by Democratic-leaning groups such as ACORN.
Cabiedies’ lawsuit sought to suppress Democratic voter turnout. Had he prevailed, Hispanic voters, Black voters, and economically disadvantaged voters would have found it much harder to exercise their voting rights.
Groups such as Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (“MALDEF”), the ACLU and ACORN have sued Rogers and the Republican Party for voter intimidation by falsely accusing registered voters of voter registration fraud.
Groups such as America Votes and the League of Women Voters have fought hard to protect all voters by opposing the overtly burdensome restrictions Cabiedes and the Republicans wanted to place on targeted minorities.
Cabiedes is running at least two other primary campaigns against effective Democrats.
Sheryl Williams Stapleton’s opponent attacked respected Democratic legislators shortly after an editorial by Jerry Ortiz Y Pino appeared in the Albuquerque Journal in support of Williams Stapleton.
Her language echoes terms only used by Susana Martinez and the staunchly conservative Albuquerque Journal editorial board, derisively labeling these good Democrats as “status quoers” and ISPAC as “a shadowy group”
Williams Stapleton’s opponent condemns her for being a “power broker” as if using her years of experience to block damaging Republican bills in the legislature is somehow bad politics.
Does Williams Stapleton’s opponent believe Democrats should not be able to wield influence in the legislature?
There has been a campaign of lies and whispers attacking Williams Stapleton because she is effective against the Martinez agenda that would cripple New Mexico.
Did Williams Stapleton’s opponent make any attempts to work with her to improve things in HD 19 before deciding to run against her?
